
Human Papilloma Virus – HPV – Biopsy
Testing Indications
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) may be visualized by electron microscopy (EM), however this test has very low sensitivity. The preferred method for HPV detection involves molecular testing and immunohistochemistry. PHO does not perform molecular testing for HPV. If molecular testing is preferred, contact your local private community laboratory. If EM is preferred, refer to the following information.

Limitations
Although the Human Papilloma virus may be visualized by electron microscopy (EM), this test has very low sensitivity. The preferred method for HPV detection involves molecular testing and immunohistochemistry.

Preparation Prior to Transport
Label the specimen with the patient’s full name, date of collection and one other unique identifier such as the patient’s date of birth or Health Card Number. Failure to provide this information may result in rejection or testing delay.
Special Instructions
Test Frequency and Turnaround Time (TAT)
EM is performed daily Monday to Friday.
TAT is up to 3 days from receipt by PHO laboratory.
Reporting
Results are reported to the ordering physician or health care provider as indicated on the requisition.
The Human Papilloma virus is detected using electron microscopy (EM).
